At the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, 30 miles east of
downtown Los Angeles, Claremont is a quiet, idyllic college town. Home to
38,000 people, Claremont boasts seven universities, several historic buildings
and tree-lined streets.
CNN & Money Magazine
named Claremont in the top five best places to live in the US in 2007, and
Claremont ranked the highest of any location in California that year. It’s not
difficult to see why the city has scored so highly, with a strong quality of
life factor, excellent schools and more than 20 city owned parks.
Like many towns in the surrounding area, Claremont was created by
the land boom and expansion of the Santa Fe Railroad in the 19th
century. When the economy faltered, the inception of Pomona College in 1888
allowed the city to remain prosperous.
